- Describe your topic.
- Low Carbohydrate Diets For The Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
- Describe why this topic is important.
- Large body of evidence has shown that Low Carb Diets for treatment of T2DM has the potential to reverse the disease, or put it in remission. This can lead to drastic improvements in morbidity and mortality rates of diabetes and its sequelae
- Tell us why you are suggesting this topic.
- Low Carb Diet is a relatively easy intervention for treatment of type 2 diabetes. If standardized, and accepted widely, this can have tremendous impact on treating Type 2 Diabetes, decreasing the disease burden to patients as well as costs to payers
- Target Date.
- Describe what you are doing currently and what you are hoping will change because of a new evidence report.
- The current standard of care is to treat DM2 with mediations aimed to reduce blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity. This leads to progressive decline in a patient's health, as insulin resistance continues to be driven by carbohydrate-heavy diet. Eliminating carbohydrates (or minimizing carb intake) will improve insulin resistance, and thus blood glucose. This will decrease diabetes-related complications, as well as decrease the need of diabetes medications, with resultant decrease in medication-related AEs.
- How will you or your group use the information from a new evidence report?
- Will motivate patients to decrease their carb intake to treat their Type 2 DM
- How would you or your group plan to disseminate information from the report? Who would you plan to disseminate it to?
- The eventual goal is to adopt a country-wide policy in treating Type 2 DM with low carb diets
- Do you know of organizations that could use an evidence report to change clinical practice? Are you a part of, or have you been in contact with, any organizations that might implement the research findings of an evidence report?
- The goal is for major medical organizations to adopt these policies
