Use and Evaluation of Mental Health Applications

NOMINATED TOPIC | February 13, 2024

1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

There continues to be a lack of guidance on how clinicians can evaluate app and use them in care settings. The prior AHRQ work in this space added a new framework that has not been adopted and so has not solved the challenge.

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

There are conflicting studies about app risks and benefits. There is also little guidance on how to use apps (and related tech) safely and within the current legal/ethical scope of medicine.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

Clinicians are able to make educated choices around picking app/tech, and able to integrate these new tools into care so that they are used to actually impact real world outcomes

4. When do you need the evidence report?

Thu, 06/13/2024

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Share it with training programs for various mental health professionals, use it to inform guidelines (and not propose a new system!), and teach it to clinicians so they can use it in care.
