School-Centered Asthma Programs

Describe your topic.
I would suggest reviewing the topic of school-centered asthma programs. There are a number of programs that have been developed over the years in order to work with schools to support students with asthma. It would be useful to obtain a description along with the goal o sth program, structure, and important outcomes, along with the limitations and needs for future development.
Describe why this topic is important.
The topic is important since asthma is the number one chronic disease attributed to school absence. Also, the CDC has a goal of reducing hospital admissions for asthma by 50% in the coming years. Schools can play an important role in improving knowledge around asthma and reducing school absence due to asthma
Tell us why you are suggesting this topic.
I have been involved in supporting and developing school-centered asthma programs for the last 13 years and appreciate their value in fostering collaboration among health care professionals and schools. There is a great need for harmonization of approaches to management of asthma in schools. A careful review could go a long way in evaluating the success, limitations and need for expansion fo such programs to a national level. A good review could provide supportive evidence to foster the development of even better programs and help to further reduce school absence and hospitalizations due to asthma.
Target Date.

Describe what you are doing currently and what you are hoping will change because of a new evidence report.
I am an asthma specialist and Direct the Pediatric Asthma Research Program at the Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado School of Medicine. It started out as a small project but has now grown to support five school systems and will support an additional four school systems in Colorado. There is potential to use this model as a core to develop a national program and/or a national collaborative to bring programs together. Such an effort would provide an important advance in health care collaboration.
How will you or your group use the information from a new evidence report?
A careful review would help us identify needs that could be used to improve our current program and also to help bring it to national level fi support.
How would you or your group plan to disseminate information from the report? Who would you plan to disseminate it to?
I am an invited speaker at national and international conferences and would use this information in publications and presentations to speak for more effort being placed on supporting schools not only for asthma but other chronic diseases.
Do you know of organizations that could use an evidence report to change clinical practice? Are you a part of, or have you been in contact with, any organizations that might implement the research findings of an evidence report?
Two organizations that would also support such an effort include the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the National Association fo School Nurses. I was part of an organizational effort to develop a white paper that addressed the benefits and also gathered resources that could be useful in developing such programs.
