Health Impact of Cystic Fibrosis in the United States

An estimated 30,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis (CF). Approximately 1000 children each year are born with the disease, which is one of the most common childhood onset genetic diseases that shortens the lives of affected individuals. Important treatment advances have combined to promote survival of patients with CF well into adulthood. A 2006 report from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation registry gave the median age of survival at that time as 37 years.
