Characteristics of CF: Origin of the Disease

CF is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). The defects alter the transport of sodium and chloride ions across epithelial membranes, affecting nearly all exocrine glands by causing production of excessive, viscous mucus.
