Treatment of Common Hip Fractures

NOMINATED TOPIC | November 16, 2016
Briefly describe a specific question, or set of related questions, about a health care test or treatment that this program should consider.

Geriatric hip fracture review is out of date. Will this be updated? Same or similar questions would be helpful for clinicians, patients and their caregivers, and to assist in surgical decisions. Some treatment preferences are now known that were not yet identified in prior 2009 review: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK32591/

Describe why this topic is important.

Hip fractures (hip fxs) are common, life-changing health events in older people that are associated with negative effects, especially functional decline, prolonged functional impairment, increased need for daily assistance/nursing home care, and high 1 year mortality. Hip fxs are increasing as the population ages and Americans become more disabled. Up to half a million American are afflicted each year

Prior AHRQ-funded

How will an answer to your research question be used or help inform decisions for you or your group?

The previous AHRQ-funded systematic literature review on common hip fractures is out of date; the included literature went through 2008 only & older studies (back to 1985) were included: http://www.ahrq.gov/research/findings/evidence-based-reports/hipfractp.html

Newer evidence has, in part, answered some of the prior knowledge gaps that experts identified subsequent to the above review for both femoral neck and intertrochanteric hip fractures in older adults: https://effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/search-for-guides-reviews-and-reports/?pageaction=displayproduct&productID=538

Given the magnitude of the hip fx problem in older Americans (# & $$), an updated review could better inform clinical decision-making and perhaps provide more specific, refined information, which apparently was not possible in the first review. Limit study years to more recent information.
