Breastfeeding Continuation Data

NOMINATED TOPIC | September 26, 2024

1. What is the decision or change (e.g. clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

What would a comprehensive breastfeeding continuation data collection system look like, and would it be possible to do it through our Electronic Health Records for EVERY baby in the pediatric health care system?

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Our current "Breastfeeding report Card" which is the primary manner which CDC assesses breastfeeding continuation rates in USA is a 19-36 month retrospective National Immunization Survey (NIS) phone survey NOT dedicated to breastfeeding, of ONLY 1% of the population. Breastfeeding is too important of a public health issue to be assessed by such a late and small phone survey that is also not dedicated to breastfeeding.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

I think that we need a COMPREHENSIVE assessment of all babies on the subject of infant feeding that would ideally be attached to the Electronic Health Records system. This could be accomplished at every well-baby health care appointment by asking and DOCUMENTING breastfeeding assessment over the course of 2 years, since AAP recommends breastfeeding for 2 years.

4. When do you need the evidence report?

Wed, 01/01/2025

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Accurate and comprehensive breastfeeding continuation data will be informative of how important breastfeeding duration is in reducing illness both acute and long-term, it will be able to be used for breastfeeding research, it will give us accurate indicators on how we are doing with breastfeeding support based on this assessment, and when we need to give more breastfeeding support to help Mothers be more successful with breastfeeding. This data could also be used to support policy and laws initiatives to increase breastfeeding support such as paid family leave and the need for more lactation providers.
