1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?
We are interested in the impact of cryo ablation (nerve block) when performed by a surgeon during open thoracic or cardiac surgery for post operative pain control. Specifically, this ancillary procedure during the primary operation (lung resection, NUSS, rib fracture, valve, etc.) is not for operative pain control, but post surgery pain control. We are interested in assessing Cryo ablation impact on patient hospital length of stay, opioid use, and effect on post discharge impact compared to standard of care.
2. Why are you struggling with this issue?
Our data suggests that several hundred hospitals are using this ancillary therapy in the US for post surgical pain control, but there are few reviews on the overall efficacy in adults and adolescents.
3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?
We would like to increase provider awareness about the efficacy of cryo ablation for post surgical pain control, and impact on reducing opioid use.
4. When do you need the evidence report?
Mon, 12/30/2024
5. What will you do with the evidence report?
- Basis for future guidelines
- Provider awareness
- Support for payor coverage decisions
