I would like to see a study surrounding the comprehension of an informed consent in relationship to patients who have the symptom of psychosis.

This is extremely important for patients who have schizophrenia spectrum disorders, because it would exam their immediate ability to understand and self-direct their medical care, and hopefully assess the need for responsible parties . It could help with application of the Mental Health law, and the scope of practice necessary to make treatment determinations, thus halting the progression of their underlying illness and subsequent brain damage & injury.

It would greatly impact the resources and care surrounding those experiencing psychosis within the medical, behavioral and judicial systems. If one is unable to make an informed decision-with complete understanding of the pros and cons of treatment, and the risks of refusing treatment-how then can we hold them accountable to Behavioral Health s standard of care- surrounding personal responsibility, self-determination and the use of no coercion.
