In people with bipolar disorder, what is the role of the primary care provider (PCP) in identifying, managing, and referring to psychiatry.

This topic is important as PCPs can help identify people who have bipolar disorder. Currently, PCPs screen for depression but may be misdiagnosing Bipolar for MDD. This is of special significance as the Collaborative Care Model (CCM) or care integration gains momentum.

Current guidelines for bipolar disorder state PCPs should not screen for bipolar disorder. PCPs are typically the initial if not the only contact persons with mental disorders will have with a medical provider. Implementation of updated guidelines for identification of bipolar disorder in primary care are necessary.
