When considering a mastectomy, providers must help patients make several decisions about post-mastectomy reconstruction, including the initial choice to undergo any procedure, then decisions on the procedure (autologous vs. implant), type of implant, surgical approach, and timing. These decisions are complex and dependent on cancer type, prognosis, patient body shape, the need for adjuvant therapies, and most importantly, patient preferences. A comprehensive systematic review will provide information on the risks and benefits of various options that will help patients make the evidence-based decision that fits her preferences.
