A Case Control Study to Assess Association of Variations in OCT Genes with Effectiveness of Metformin in Diabetic Patients

Abstract Archived

Topic Abstract

This pilot study will test the hypothesis that individual human genetic variation among persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) affects the clinical response to the oral hypoglycemic Metformin. Specifically, using a case-control study design, the study will assess how the variations in two single nucleotide polymorphisms of the Organic Cation Transporter 1 (OCT1) gene, and how the variation in a single nucleotide polymorphism of the Organic Cation Transporter 2 (OCT2) gene are associated with response to Metformin therapy in African-American and non-Hispanic white individuals with DM that have never taken Metformin.
