Chemotherapy Pregnancy Test Frequency

NOMINATED TOPIC | October 28, 2022

1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

In patients receiving chemotherapy, how often should pregnancy tests be checked after treatment is initiated.

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

There is variation across the country. There is consensus that a pregnancy test should be taken before treatment starts however once a patient is on treatment there is substantial variation. Some centers do a test every single treatment, some centers do a test at the beginning of every cycle and others only do the one at initiation of treatment. Over testing is a drain on health care payers and labs if not necessary.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

Would like to see a standard of care for this as part of the Choosing Wisely campaign to potentially reduce excess or unnecessary testing.

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Establish a standard of care for patients receiving chemotherapy or other antineoplastic treatments.
