Electronic Health Records & Clinician Burnout

NOMINATED TOPIC | October 24, 2022

1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

What are the realistic prospects for real-time translation of medical interview speech and notes on patient affect into electronic health records, employing artificial intelligence technology?

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Some clinicians report that presently available Electronic Health Records systems are a factor in widespread physician burnout and patient complaints of inadequate doctor-patient interaction during appointments. By diverting clinician attention into the EHR screen and keyboard, much can be lost in both diagnostic accuracy and patient perception of the clinician's interest and support.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

Desired outcome of this research is a published summary report on the current state of technology for freeing clinicians from over-involvement in EHR data entry during patient app

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

See narrative 3.
