Health Benefits of Clinician Strategies

NOMINATED TOPIC | June 12, 2020

Health Benefits of Clinician Strategies

1. What is the decision or change you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

What are the health benefits of any or all of the following commonly used but rarely documented clinician strategies: reassurance, encouragement, empathy, re-framing, supportive listening, and touch.

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

These strategies, once commonly values and used, are increasingly underappreciated, under-documented, and under-reimbursed. A cursory review of RCTs suggests to me that they may be as effective as commonly used medications.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

If we are going to use data from electronic health records to guide improvements in therapy, we need to know what is actually happening during clinician-patient encounters. We also need to monitor the effects of EMRs, quality reporting, and administrative burdens on key aspects of clinician-patient interactions. Documentation of the positive effects of these strategies could improve both use and documentation.

4. When do you need the evidence report?

Sat, 12/31/2022

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Disseminate it throughout my state to academicians and community primary care clinicians.
