Involuntary use of Electro-Convulsive Therapy

NOMINATED TOPIC | December 11, 2022

1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

In jurisdictions which still practice Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT), and can still mandate it's use for involuntary patients, what effect does that have on treatment-seeking amongst patients with mental health issues?

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Most research into ECT is into the effects of the treatment itself, but what effect does the threat of it being forced on patients have on their willingness to access treatment?

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

A broader perspective on the effects of ECT on patient openness, treatment-seeking, and if it induces fear and withdrawal from health services.

4. What will you do with the evidence report?
