Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diets

1. What is the decision or change (e.g. clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

We are interested in the health benefits of very low carbohydrate ketogenic diets as therapy for disease prevention, reversal and health promotion. We would like to know if ketogenic eating is beneficial as adjunct therapy in more advance disease states. We would like an honest unbiased review of the robust literature surrounding nutritional ketosis.

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Mainstream nutrition does not address this matter despite the growing public interest.

The most recent statement from the US dietary guideline committee states its recommendations are for healthy Americans. This is tragic because now the majority about 60% of Americans suffer from chronic illnesses which are highly likely to be diet related.

Even though health care spending continues to increase in America chronic illnesses and obesity at still growing at an alarming rate. We suspect it is due to the modern American diet.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

We would like to see ketogenic diets as a first line therapy/ lifestyle change in appropriate populations in the primary care setting.

A change to US dietary guidelines reflecting low carbohydrate eating recommendations.

Improvements and reversal of the chronic disease burden afflicting America.

Cost savings on health care in America.

4. When do you need the evidence report?

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Design a research study testing a novel nurse practitioner led intercollaboration care model that is community based. It will help support the design of a nursing care model that incorporates ketogenic eating to help create healthy lifestyle behavior changes and can lead to reduction or elimination of medication burden. Overall it will help with work to create healthier communities across the nation through adressing nutrition education in combination with mental health education.
