Regenerative Medicine for Musculoskeletal Conditions
1. What is the decision or change you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?
We are interested in the efficacy of various forms of regenerative medicine (e.g. PRP, stem cells) for common musculoskeletal conditions including tendinopathy, enthesopathy, osteoarthritis, etc.
2. Why are you struggling with this issue?
The field of regenerative medicine has grown exponentially and with it claims regarding (1) mechanism of action, (2) efficacy and (3) indications or diagnosis. As a result, PRP and stem cells are being used non-specifically to treat various musculoskeletal condition; and in many cases there is not clear evidence-basis for their application.
3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?
There needs to be improved guidance for the use of these novel treatments, expected outcomes, and risk of adverse events; eventually a formal guideline should be created. There needs to be evidence-based guidance on which products (and dosage) are recommended for use.
4. When do you need the evidence report?
5. What will you do with the evidence report?
An evidence report could be disseminated through various organizations and within the field of physiatry to encourage proper evidence-based use of regenerative medicine therapies.
