Zinc for Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder

NOMINATED TOPIC | October 8, 2023

1. What is the decision or change (e.g. clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

Question: Does Zinc play a significant role in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and can the management of zinc intake affect the treatment and quality of life for patients with these disorders?

Population: Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder

Intervention and Comparator: Synthesized zinc, bio-available zinc

Outcomes: response to treatment, noted levels prior and post treatment compared to a control group, severity of symptoms related to measured levels of zinc in the brain

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Data involving this potential method of treatment are inconclusive and corollary, with no direct study at this time targeted at identifying this connection.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

I would hope to see a medical study examining the effects of zinc treatment for schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients examining the effects of the lack, average, and measured introduction of zinc in an effort to determine its effects, if any, in potentially treating these disorders.

4. When do you need the evidence report?

Sun, 10/08/2028.

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Utilize the information in my own medical decisions affecting me, a patient with schizoaffective disorder.
