Telehealth for Cancer Patients

Question: How do telehealth encounters in patients with cancer impact treatment adherence, symptom management, and quality of life

Population:
Patients with a cancer diagnosis

Outcomes:
Treatment adherence, patient satisfaction, Quality of Life

Setting; ambulatory/home care

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Patients with cancer face barriers in getting to ambulatory appointments, the frequency of symptom assessments and treatment administration.

Telehealth may be underutilized in patients with cancer and could be explored as means to improve access to care, especially in those with transportation barriers and those in rural settings.

Studies exploring the possible utilization and effects of telehealth in patients with cancer are limited.

There is variation in what types of patient encounters are performed and reimbursed via telehealth.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

Nurses and advanced practice providers will be more heavily leveraged in providing telehealth care to patients with cancer to assess symptoms and side effects, monitor treatment adherence and provide early intervention for progressing symptoms.

Reimbursement for telehealth encounters in patients with cancer will not be a barrier to telehealth utilization.

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Use the outcomes of telehealth encounters in patients with cancer to make recommendations to healthcare institutions about how to care for patients remotely.
Provide education to nurses and advanced practice providers about the types of encounters that can be performed safely in patients with cancer.
