Describe why this topic is important.

The period 19992007 was a phase of consolidation in our understanding of how to treat eating disorders many reviews reaching identical conclusions and little significant original research to add to the findings. Since then there have been substantial developments in the empirical base for psychotherapies for eating disorders with many large scale studies that need to be considered by clinicians and researchers alike. Others are due to be published over the coming year. Some have been successful in improving our positive outcomes others have not. Some of those studies have added to the choice of therapies that can be considered as useful while others have reduced the apparent utility of some options that were previously used.Other important strands in the research of the past decade area Clear evidence that the research in the large scale efficacy studies can be translated into effective therapies in routine clinical practice.b A greater understanding of process issues such as the benefits of early change the importance of nutritional change and the relationship between the working alliance and therapy outcomes. Therefore it is time for an update on the summary papers produced by Bulik and her colleagues 2007 under this scheme. There is a further issue that makes this the right time to update our knowledge base for consumers of such papers. In 2013 the DSM diagnostic scheme was revised and the ICD system is to be updated in 20162017 meaning that the reader needs to be educated as to the way that these changes might impact on our understanding of the benefits of psychotherapies for eating disorders. It is also important to note that the evidence for pharmacological therapies has barely shifted in the past decade the medications were limited ten years ago and remain just as limited today. This fact adds to the importance of exploring the evidence relating to improvement of psychological therapies.

How will an answer to your research question be used or help inform decisions for you or your group?

The primary benefit will be providing clinicians sufferers and carers with a much clearer choice about the optimal treatment for anorexia nervosa bulimia nervosa and atypical cases. The Academy for Eating Disorders is the leading organisation internationally for professionals with extensive links to related organisations across the globe.
