Treatment for Chronic and Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

NOMINATED TOPIC | August 27, 2018
Describe your topic.
Treatment options for both chronic and paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation
Describe why this topic is important.
A Fib has become a very common health problem that is treated with various options with no comparative evidence of outcomes. For example, is the "pill in the pocket" the best option for the paroxysmal type? When A Fib becomes more frequent, or nearly constant, is it best to allow it to continue, ensuring treatment with anticoagulants while controlling the heart rate? What is the comparative success rate of the various invasive procedures, ablation, etc.? Of the latter two approaches, how do the outcomes compare?
Tell us why you are suggesting this topic.
I personally recently had to make the decision re the latter two approaches above, and attempted to find evidence but was informed that there are no such studies. The target date listed below is not realistic for your planning and action, unless you already have studies that I didn't find, but is the latest date I could change my personal treatment plan.
Target Date.
2018-09-17
Describe what you are doing currently and what you are hoping will change because of a new evidence report.
Previously described.
How will you or your group use the information from a new evidence report?
I believe that ALL cardiologists would make use of this information.
How would you or your group plan to disseminate information from the report? Who would you plan to disseminate it to?
I personally would likely not be involved in the dissemination, but as always, would refer interested parties to AHRQ as an excellent resource.
Do you know of organizations that could use an evidence report to change clinical practice? Are you a part of, or have you been in contact with, any organizations that might implement the research findings of an evidence report?
I assume that all the various cardiology organizations and societies would make use to the report.
