Watchman Device Effectiveness

NOMINATED TOPIC | February 13, 2024

1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

The Watchman device is being promoted to prevent blood clots, especially in former AFib patients. However, no studies have been found that addressed important questions prior to utilizing this device. There are risks to be considered in the decision to use or not use this device. Therefore, Relative Risk and Benefit data is needed, specifically, considering the risk of ischemic stroke, the age of the patient, the prevalence and incidence of AFib, the risk from anesthetic, the risk from the procedure, and the risk of hemorrhagic stroke from continued anticoagulants.

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

As a patient I am struggling with this decision, and my physicians cannot point to any research that addresses the relative risks and benefits.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

Currently, I am not aware of much research that addresses multi-faceted risks and and benefits. A previously recommended new study to address stroke prevention in former AFib patients may be somewhat helpful.

4. When do you need the evidence report?

Wed, 05/15/2024

5. What will you do with the evidence report?

Help me make my decision about undergoing the procedure.
